International Sushi Day Today

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy sushi, which is kinda the same thing.

In the last two decades, it’s become a bit of a sensation, the traditional Japanese meal known as sushi. Often considered to be simply raw fish (In Mexico We Have a Word For Sushi: Bait), and thus snubbed by many people, the truth behind what sushi is is more complex, and it can be a delicious repast for those so inclined. International Sushi Day today to celebrate this potentially delicious meal and seeks to raise awareness about the truths and fiction surrounding it.

History of International Sushi Day

Tracing sushi’s origins leads us on an interesting journey, taking us back to SE Asia and a method of storing and preserving fish for later consumption. Known as Narezushi, fish was stored by being wrapped in salted and fermented rice where it would remain good for months at a time thanks to the fermentation of the rice… For more on the story go here

Thank goodness yesterday was a holiday because it was also East Your Vegetables Day and we all missed that.

Zeppelins In A Cloud * at Joe Fish – Notes From The Editor

Zeppelins In A Cloud * at Joe Fish – Notes From The Editor

* In English, Zeppelin is a slang word for sausage, usually used in the phrase’ Zeppelins in a Cloud, ‘ meaning ‘sausage and mash.’

So we all know it’s cold…. We’ve been talking quite a bit about it on St Francis Today and looking at all the possible solutions, like hot water bottles, electric blankets, fireplaces, heaters, and Old Brown Sherry. We like to be solution-driven.

On Thursday evenings, Joe Fish at the Cape St Francis Resort also offers the Winter Warmers special. It starts with a Happy Hour from 17h30 to 18h30 and then the specials.

Among the tempting options like lamb curry and a 450g t-bone steak, I opted for the ultimate comfort of bangers and mash, and it was a satisfying choice. It comprised three generous pork sausages, a mound of rich gravy, a heap of peas, and a deliciously onion-laden gravy.

Honestly, you can’t mess up pork sausages, but these were done perfectly. The mash was smooth, and the gravy was the winner.

Come Hungry

I dived in, and after a first round of one sausage, gravy, and mash mixed in with peas, I suddenly realised that there was quite a lot of food on my plate. So, I slowed it down and had another glass of red. I finished off another porkie mixed with the rest, but by then, I was done, despite my wanting to finish off the plate.

It’s a big portion, so you need to come hungry. My son’s steak, which is a chunk of meat, looked delicious and came with chips for R150. It was done to perfection, and he cleaned the bone.

The resort’s atmosphere is always inviting, with a crackling fire near the bar and a hint of Old Brown Sherry warming the spirits even before the meal begins.

Zeppelins In A Cloud

The winner is the pork bangers and mash, though. At R129, I didn’t manage to finish it and had to take the rest of the meal home with me. It was just as good the next day.

There are often grumbles about how expensive some restaurants are and that there are not too many specials for the locals. This one’s not bad at all. A happy hour followed by a big meal of delicious home-style food, at a very competitive price.

You can thank me later.

International Invitees Arrive For WSL J-Bay Classic Presented by Corona

JEFFREYS BAY, Eastern Cape, South Africa (Sunday, June 16, 2024) –The elite field of International Invitees Arrive in Jeffreys Bay for the World Surf League (WSL) J-Bay Classic Presented by Corona Specialty event, which runs from 17 June through 23 June 2024. While the competition has been called off for tomorrow, the excitement and positive energy from competitors and fans filled the air at the official event opening.

Internation Guests Arrive

“That grom in me is definitely bubbling, it’s like surf royalty all around me,” veteran competitor Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) said. “The most exciting thing is that we’re always in competition mode, striving to be better and to be asked to just come and surf and put on a show, that means more than you think,” Fitzgibbons said, who is currently third on the Challenger Series rankings.

“It feels like we’re being seen and it’s a long body of work. It’s been over 20 years since I picked up a board and these days I’d like to think of myself as a hybrid car model, so I do a little bit of the Tour, a little bit of the Challenger Series and then a Specialty. I’m very efficient and economical so I’ll come wherever you want me!”

World Champions Occhilupo, Gilmore and De Souza Excited to Return to J-Bay

The 8-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 1999 World Champion Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo (AUS) and 2015 World Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) return to J-Bay filled with excitement to surf Supertubes without the pressure of the World Tour on their shoulders.

“For me, J-Bay and Bells are the best waves in the world,” Occhilupo said. “This wave has given me so much, thanks to Cheron Kraak who held the Country Feeling Classic in 1984 which I won. We were so looking forward to compete here back then. It’s so good to be back, it feels really nice.”

Gilmore, who won the Corona Open J-Bay in 2018, said she is a fan of all kinds of surfing. “I love watching all kinds of surfing whether it’s in competition or free surfing,” Gilmore said. “I’m just super excited to go out there and not feel the pressure of a normal contest and be out there to enjoy the ride. I’m so happy to be back, I really love this place.”

Expecting his first son, De Souza recognises Jeffreys Bay as a special place for family. “First of all, happy Father’s day,” De Souza said. “This place is so family oriented, I always see beautiful families coming to watch this event. It’s my dream to bring my own family to watch the event. The year I won J-Bay in 2012 was a very special year. The waves were incredible,” De Souza reflected. “I created my whole technique out here, I’ve been coming here since I was a grom. Coming back here with all these stars, it’s incredible.”

Three Teams Decided for Teams Division

In an exciting addition to the Specialty competition, there will be a Teams Division, where three teams of six surfers will get the lineup all to themselves to compete for the overall best team award. Team captains De Souza, Gilmore and Occy selected their teams through a random draw.
