* In English, Zeppelin is a slang word for sausage, usually used in the phrase’ Zeppelins in a Cloud, ‘ meaning ‘sausage and mash.’

So we all know it’s cold…. We’ve been talking quite a bit about it on St Francis Today and looking at all the possible solutions, like hot water bottles, electric blankets, fireplaces, heaters, and Old Brown Sherry. We like to be solution-driven.

On Thursday evenings, Joe Fish at the Cape St Francis Resort also offers the Winter Warmers special. It starts with a Happy Hour from 17h30 to 18h30 and then the specials.

Among the tempting options like lamb curry and a 450g t-bone steak, I opted for the ultimate comfort of bangers and mash, and it was a satisfying choice. It comprised three generous pork sausages, a mound of rich gravy, a heap of peas, and a deliciously onion-laden gravy.

Honestly, you can’t mess up pork sausages, but these were done perfectly. The mash was smooth, and the gravy was the winner.

Come Hungry

I dived in, and after a first round of one sausage, gravy, and mash mixed in with peas, I suddenly realised that there was quite a lot of food on my plate. So, I slowed it down and had another glass of red. I finished off another porkie mixed with the rest, but by then, I was done, despite my wanting to finish off the plate.

It’s a big portion, so you need to come hungry. My son’s steak, which is a chunk of meat, looked delicious and came with chips for R150. It was done to perfection, and he cleaned the bone.

The resort’s atmosphere is always inviting, with a crackling fire near the bar and a hint of Old Brown Sherry warming the spirits even before the meal begins.

Zeppelins In A Cloud

The winner is the pork bangers and mash, though. At R129, I didn’t manage to finish it and had to take the rest of the meal home with me. It was just as good the next day.

There are often grumbles about how expensive some restaurants are and that there are not too many specials for the locals. This one’s not bad at all. A happy hour followed by a big meal of delicious home-style food, at a very competitive price.

You can thank me later.
