A Word About You, Our Readers – notes from the editor
Every now and then, it’s good to turn the lens around. Not to shine the spotlight on another new development, a council update, Durban, or a dramatic low-tide rescue from the Seal Point rip, but on you, the readers of St Francis Today. Because if you’ve been watching closely (as many of you clearly do), patterns are emerging, and it’s worth checking out.
Firstly, let’s talk about the environment. Content about our local environment, flora, and fauna generally generates the most reads and sometimes a lot of feedback. People who live here and love this area do so because they are nature lovers and appreciate the beauty of our natural areas. You guys are obviously very protective and wish to preserve what we have, and rightfully so.
Then, let’s talk politics. It’s always a surprise when national stories about Jacob Zuma or Floyd Shivambu outpace local news in clicks. But somehow, they do. It could be the absurdity. It could be the drama. Either way, when those names appear, eyes follow, and we’ve come to expect it. They are about as popular as shark stories.
Local Stories
But it’s the local stories that really ignite conversation. Nothing draws more impassioned, thoughtful (and occasionally barbed) feedback than news on developments in St Francis Bay or Cape St Francis. These topics clearly hit home. They matter to you. And whether the comments come with a sharp edge or a dry chuckle, they help shape the conversation we’re having as a community.
Interestingly, the Editorial Notes, those little digressions I add from time to time, are being read more and more. It’s heartening to know that in between headlines, there’s room for mood and whimsy.
Local Sports Club News
You also turn out for local sports club news, especially youth events, and you show up in clicks for restaurant reviews. And when the Kouga Municipality sends us something clear and useful? You read that, too.
And then there’s the jigsaw puzzle. A surprising number of you tackle it daily, quickly, competitively, and with silent determination. That small, quiet corner of the site might be its beating heart.
So thank you for reading, reacting, puzzling, and poking fun. St Francis Today wouldn’t be what it is without you.
And again, feel free to comment. There might be prizes.
