Three new boreholes set to boost water supply in St Francis Bay

St Francis Bay – Kouga Local Municipality has officially commenced the development of three additional boreholes in St Francis Bay as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance water security in the region.

The project, valued at R9.55 million, is funded through the national Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) and is expected to be completed by 30 June 2025.

6 litres per second

With a combined expected yield of 6 litres per second, the new boreholes will bring the total number of operational boreholes in St Francis Bay to eight, boosting the total yield to approximately 20 litres per second. This strategic investment will significantly enhance the town’s ability to meet demand – particularly during peak holiday seasons when consumption reaches as much as 6 megalitres per day, compared to 1.5 megalitres per day during off-peak periods.

One of the boreholes is being drilled adjacent to the municipal reservoirs in Tarragona Road, while the other two are located along the deliveries and contractors’ access road to the St Francis Links.

Water security

“Water security remains a top priority for the municipality,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman. “The additional boreholes are part of a broader, long-term strategy to diversify and stabilise our water sources – ensuring we can sustainably meet the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”

He emphasised that infrastructure development of this kind was critical to future-proofing Kouga’s economy and improving quality of life for all communities.

“We are working relentlessly to reduce our dependency on external water sources and to build a resilient infrastructure network that supports growth. These boreholes are another step in that direction,” he said.

9 Best Things About a Whiskey Tasting Event

9 Best Things About a Whiskey Tasting Event

Let’s have a quick look at what is cool about whiskey in our 9 Best Things article

Buzzing

The Buzz Without the Binge
You’re not there to knock ‘em back, you’re there to swirl, sniff, sip, and savour. It’s about quality, not quantity… though a lekker buzz is a happy bonus.

A Guided Tour for Your Tastebuds
From smoky Islays to smooth Irish pours and honeyed bourbons, your palate gets taken on a first-class flight around the whiskey world without leaving St Francis.

You Learn Stuff (Without Feeling Like School)
Who knew the difference between a single malt and a blend could be so fascinating? Or that whiskey picks up 60% of its flavour from the barrel? You’ll leave a little wiser, with possibly a gentle slur.

Art Of Nose

The Aroma Game Is Strong
Each glass is a lesson in the art of the nose. One might smell like vanilla and toasted oak, the next like leather armchairs and pipe smoke in your granddad’s study. You’ll never smell whiskey the same way again.

The Crowd Is Usually Pretty Chill
Whiskey tastings tend to draw a great crowd who are enthusiastic, mellow, and up for a chat. It’s hard to find anyone taking themselves too seriously when you’re all comparing notes on “hints of dark chocolate and wet stone.”

Long, Peppery Finish

You Get to Say Fancy Things Like “Finish”
There’s real joy in casually dropping lines like, “I’m getting a long, peppery finish on this one,” and watching your friends nod like they totally get it.

You Might Find Your Whiskey
Everyone has that “aha!” moment—a pour that makes you sit back and go, yes, this is the one. It’s like falling in love. With a bottle.

You Get Away With Making Up Tasting Notes
Nobody knows what “a whisper of saddle leather” or “the ghost of orchard mist” tastes like. But say it with confidence, and people will nod thoughtfully. Bonus points if you throw in “unctuous mouthfeel” or “like licking a well-read novel.” Just using the word unctuous is cool, like using ‘pettifogging’ or ‘gormless.’

You Leave Happy, Warm, and Just a Bit Wiser
Whether you remember every note or not, you walk away with a warm belly, a satisfied grin, and a newfound respect for the amber nectar.
