As mentioned in yesterday’s notes, we love a good moan and have plenty to whine about. The main (and justified) topics of our whinging are:
- The load-shedding crisis.
- The impending water crisis seems to worsen.
- The incredible inflation rates and rising living costs.
- The unbearable fuel price hikes.
When arriving back in the country after a month away, the few things that struck me were thus: there seemed to be a fresh batch of solar panels around, more boreholes in operation, and plenty of Jojos wherever you look. All of this is positive, as it means that people are waking up to the fact that the only way we can prevail through the selective collapse of certain services is to look after ourselves.
It’s not a good situation, nor is it the answer. But, still, the fact remains that if you, as a homeowner, want security that you will have water and electricity through the long cold months of winter, you will have to procure it yourself.
The St Francis Property Owners Association has a document for Power and Water Security Solutions on its website that has gained interest. Many people who want to install either water or power security solutions need some help, and this document outlines the best systems and practices. There is also a list of suppliers local to St Francis Bay, and while it is not imperative to use these suppliers – you might have a closer contact in your area of need – these suppliers are there to help.
In some cases, payment plans and financial assistance are available for those who might need help with outlaying.
For many residents, it is just tat little bit of assistance that is needed – a 5,000-litre Jojo tank harvesting rainwater, or a few panels and a small inverter and battery giving off an hour or two of essential electricity during the darkest of load-shedding hours.
