The controversy never ends with the World Surf League, with naysayers saying that the Championship Tour judges gifted Filipe Toledo the win in El Salvador over Griffen because of online death threats. These threats and menacing words came out after the Surf Ranch contest, where Gabriel Medina hit up social media to show his disgust at being poorly judged and underscored on the waves at the Kelly Slater Wave Pool.
Be that as it may, it is time for the surfers to get ready for JBay soon enough, and then the waves of Supertubes will quickly separate a few of the surfers in the mix. A wave like Supers might be one of the best waves in the world, but it exposes your weaknesses.
Right now, the tour is heading for Durban to surf at the Ballito Pro, presented by O’Neill. This contest is a Challenger Series event – CS10,000 Men’s Pro.
Now in its 54th edition, the Ballito Pro is the world’s longest-running professional surfing event and Stop No.3 on the World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series (CS) for men and women.
At the end of the 2023 season, the Top 10 men on the Challenger Series rankings will qualify for the 2024 Championship Tour (CT). Out of the six Challenger Series competitions, only the top four results will count toward their end-of-year rankings.
South Africa’s top contenders, former Ballito Pro winner Adin Masencamp and local favourite Luke Thompson, will line up against the likes of Imaikalani DeVault (HAW), Samuel Pupo (BRA), Cole Houshmand (USA) and Jett Schilling (USA) who are currently leading the rankings after the first two events in Australia.

After the Ballito Pro, we go to JBay, and then it’s time for the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by The Royal St Andrews Hotel in Port Alfred. This looks to be an exciting event for the juniors and is the second last in a five-event series that has taken the junior surfers in the country by storm.

Surfing season is upon us in South Africa, and the best junior surfers in the country will be heading down to Port Alfred towards the end of July. Here are the quick facts about the Rip Curl GromSearch Port Alfred presented by The Royal St Andrews Hotel.
What’s Happening?
The Rip Curl GromSearch is rolling into Port Alfred on the 28th of July for a weekend of the best junior surfing in the country. The contest, presented by the Royal St Andrews Hotel, is the fourth in a five-event series that has proven to be the most popular surfing series in the country this year.

Where Is It Happening?
East Beach, Port Alfred, Eastern Cape – In the words of surf journalist Jazz Kuschke…
“When the swell is just right (it likes long-range south to southwest swell), East Beach, off the Kowie River Mouth in Port Alfred, is a long, fast hollow right-hander breaking over a sand bottom. As with most breaks, that’s not every day, though and more often, you’ll find a sedate, short left-hander bowling up in the rip toward the rocks with easy, peaky rights further down the beach. Experienced surfers jump from the rocks into the mouth at the head of the wall instead of paddling out, but this can be somewhat hairy, so don’t attempt it until your confidence and ocean knowledge are on a level.
When it’s on, it can provide a fast hollow top section with the potential of some solid tubes. Toward the inside, the face opens up, allowing for some rail and lip work, with the ride often punctuated by a left-breaking peak to make up some good close-out aerial stuff.”
The tournament is presented by The Royal St. Andrews Hotel, which will be offering special accommodation rates for officials, athletes and their families.

R1150.00 per room per night, single accommodation and inclusive of breakfast. R675.00 per person sharing per night, double accommodation and inclusive of breakfast. This translates to R1350.00 per room per night, B&B for two persons.

When Is It Taking Place?
What was provisionally booked as a two-day event quickly changed into three full days of surfing. The competition will take place from 28 – 30 July, historically a very good time to surf in Port Alfred.
Why Is It Happening?
Junior surfing is the place to be in South Africa right now. With their well-run events spread over the calendar year, the future of our sport is in safe hands with Surfing South Africa.
The Rip Curl GromSearch series allows kids to compete against the best surfers in the same age bracket from their country. This format gives these groms insight into a life of competitive surfing. It gives them the invaluable experience of surfing and competing in different waves nationwide.
Who Is Competing?
The best junior surfers in the country will all be vying for their points and prizes. The Rip Curl GromSearch contests are all Premier SAST events, with 1,000 points going to the winners and prizemoney per all Premier events.

The U16 division is recognised as the premier division at the GromSearch contests.

When investing, we all have different appetites and understandings of risk. Our views around this 4-letter word result from past experiences we have had, read or heard about. This emotional response seldom serves us. Perhaps the best way to understand real risk is to not focus on the money or the markets.
At Client Care, we have a different understanding of risk from many of the people we work with and part of the process we take new clients through aims to help them understand what real risk is.
Let’s take a look at what we see as real risk.
The number 1 question everyone has is, “Am I going to be ok?” Put differently, this means, “Am I going to outlive my money?” A scary thought.
Other real risks we should consider important are:
Not achieving your cherished life goals.
Not understanding stock market history.
Choosing short-term comfort over long-term security.
Moving to cash during a temporary decline.
Falling in love with what’s working now.
Following the news rather than your financial plan.
Going all-in on one stock.
A plan with no options.
Permanent loss of your hard-earned capital.
Forgetting that inflation is the real enemy.
Missing out on the next stock market advance.
Not saving enough for your future.
Trying to time the stock market.
Not insuring your income.
Not knowing what you don’t know.
Unfortunately, the financial services industry does a great job of confusing the general public to believe they need complicated products and funds to build real wealth. Nothing is further from the truth.
Real wealth is built by understanding that our behaviour around investing is all we need to focus on. Markets go up, always. So buy the great companies of the world (stock market) and focus on the things we can control, such as living within our means and understanding what makes us happy.
Build your long-term financial plan and stick to it. If something seems complicated, wonder why that is? Simplicity works; accept it and behave yourself to wealth.
