The Thyspunt Alliance is urging Kouga residents and interested parties to submit formal objections to the proposed Thyspunt nuclear power station before the extended deadline of 29 May 2026.
The current public participation process forms part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Phase linked to the Eskom Nuclear Power Plant Draft Scoping Report (2026).
Public Comment Process Open
Residents now have an opportunity to raise concerns before the project moves further through the environmental approval process.
According to the alliance, members of the public should first register as Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) before lodging objections through the official channels.
Registration requests can be sent to Nuclear-PP-EIA@wsp.com.
Participants should include:
- Full name
- Contact details
- Physical address
- Interest in the project, where applicable
Key Issues Raised By The Alliance
The alliance states that objections should clearly reference the Eskom Nuclear Power Plant Draft Scoping Report (2026) and contain a formal statement of objection.
Furthermore, the organisation has highlighted several areas of concern linked to the proposed development site between Oyster Bay and Cape St Francis near Jeffreys Bay.
Suggested grounds for objection include:
- Biodiversity sensitivity
- Heritage protection concerns
- Climate risk
- Socioeconomic impacts
- Emergency planning and PAZ issues
- Inadequate or outdated data
- Failure to assess renewable energy alternatives
In addition, objectors may request that Thyspunt be rejected as a nuclear site or that a full reassessment process be conducted.
Official Documents Available
Once registered, participants can access the Draft Scoping Report and supporting documents through the WSP public documents portal.
The alliance also encourages residents to request written confirmation of their submission by adding the following line to their email:
“Please confirm receipt of this submission and my registration as an Interested and Affected Party.”
The supplied information notes that late submissions may not be included in the final process.
Campaign Continues
The Thyspunt Alliance was established to oppose the construction of a nuclear power station at Thyspunt in the Kouga district.
Meanwhile, the organisation continues to call for public support for its ongoing campaign and legal fund.

I do not agree with the advancement of this Nuclear power station

We need to protect and preserve the sea life. This is there home as much as it is ours. Selfish actions only lead to more harm than solution.
I stand against the building of the power plant. It will bring unwanted residents amd increase the population of the township. It is a danger to the coastline, the environment and the residents.
The beautiful coastline of st Francis bay is home to many humans and sea life. The construction of a Nuclear Power plant will destruct that significantly. Power plants discharge large volumes of heated water back into the ocean. This elevated temperature can stress or kill local marine life and lower dissolved oxygen levels. The construction process can be estimated to take around 8 years and 5000 employees will be travelling in and out, this is likely to increase crime. The damage done to St Francis bay and the surrounding coastline will be irreversible.
