Kouga Local Municipality has launched a new weekly water safety initiative aimed at keeping residents and visitors better informed about potential dangers in and around the water.
Starting this week, the municipality will share practical water safety information every Friday, including safety tips, reminders and important updates.
The initiative is designed to help communities across Kouga stay informed, prepared and safe, particularly as people continue to enjoy the region’s beaches, rivers and other waterways.
Rip Currents In The Spotlight
The first safety message focuses on rip currents, which are powerful currents of water moving away from the shore and can carry even strong swimmers out to sea.
If caught in a rip current, swimmers should avoid fighting directly against it. Instead, Lifesaving South Africa advises swimming out of the current before making your way back towards shore.
If you cannot escape, float or tread water and call or wave for assistance.
Water Safety Every Week
The new weekly campaign will cover different aspects of water safety, providing residents and visitors with simple information that could prove vital in an emergency.
With Kouga’s beaches and waterways forming such an important part of life in the region, knowing how to recognise potential hazards – and what to do when something goes wrong – can make all the difference.
