A major offshore gas development is being proposed for the South Coast between Mossel Bay and Cape St Francis, and local residents now have an opportunity to see exactly what is planned, speak directly to the people involved and make sure St Francis has a voice in the process.
Main Street 1549 (Pty) Ltd has applied for environmental authorisation to develop an offshore gas field in Block 11B/12B, together with associated production activities.
The proposed development lies offshore between Mossel Bay and Cape St Francis. That makes this considerably more than a distant development somewhere along the South African coastline. It is a proposal that reaches our part of the coast and one that St Francis residents, surfers, fishermen, boat users and anyone with an interest in the marine environment may want to understand properly.
A Public Open Day will be held in St Francis Bay on Monday, 21 September 2026, as part of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment process.
The Proposed Development
The application covers the development of an offshore gas field and associated production activities.
Maps, posters and video material explaining the project will be available at the Open Day. Members of the environmental assessment team and representatives of Main Street will also be there to answer questions about the proposal.
St Francis Bay Public Open Day
The Open Day takes place at the Sea Vista Community Hall, Geelbek Street, Sea Vista, from 3 pm to 7 pm.
There is no need to arrive at 3 pm or remain for the entire session. It is being run as an open-house event, with residents able to arrive at any time between 3 pm and 7 pm and spend as much time as they need looking through the information and speaking to the team.
This is the stage at which the information is on the table and the public has an opportunity to engage with it.
If the future of the waters off Cape St Francis matters to you, Monday 21 September is worth putting in the diary.
Questions about the Open Day can be directed to SLR via WhatsApp on 071 586 5881.
