Mayor Hattingh Bornman Addresses Sea Vista residents in St Francis Bay
“This evening, I had the privilege of meeting with the Sea Vista community for a report-back session. It was an important opportunity to reconnect and provide updates on key issues affecting the area.
Electricity Connections
In August, we gathered in the same location to discuss the status of a portion of land owned by the Department of Public Works. One of the pressing challenges remains the ongoing issue of illegal electricity connections. This poses a severe risk to lives in the community.
Survey Conducted
Three main projects in the pipeline to solve the electricity issue are:
1) A survey is being conducted to identify each resident in the defined area; 600 houses have been visited so far.
2) Get permission from the Department of Public Works to work on their land.
3) Make a budget available to implement the project of getting legal connections to residents.
I want to thank residents for their patience and understanding as we work together to deliver much-needed electricity to our Sea Vista residents.

Over the last two summer seasons, I have seen (and experienced) local families being turned away from restaurants for not making a booking. This even in the early afternoons and even when there are 20 or more visible open seats at tables.
Of course, the establishment staff must abide by its rules, and bookings are essential over the season. Still, I believe that good-meaning locals, especially families with kids, should never be turned away unless accommodating them is absolutely impossible. Even then, a friendly three-minute explanatory conversation with the owner or manager, instead of a cold-shouldered turn-away, would help ease these situations.
Local Support
Local support should extend beyond any Loyalty Program. Maybe it should be called a “Loyalty Philosophy’ or something similar. It might mean that a few little nooks and crannies in restaurants are available as last-minute tables for well-meaning residents. For the local hospitality industry to have a mindset of ‘making a plan’ should local families arrive on the spur of the moment or without bookings, etc.
Sports Clubs
There are also ample opportunities for outlets to establish year-long loyalty programs with sports clubs and associations. The sort that does their activities throughout the year and can be associated with a brick-and-mortar establishment. There are so many clubs out there, including cycling, paddling, running, surfing, open-water swimming, fishing and more. They could all be included in some reciprocal loyalty for the benefit of both the club and the establishment/restaurant. An example is the existing and successful St Francis Runners and Full Stop Cafe program
If there is a long-term partnership with a sports association, it is much easier to deal with a few weeks of busy times. This secure in the knowledge that there has been year-long support up to this point,
Well done to those who already have such loyalty perspectives for locals. It is much appreciated, even if the little table next to the toilet entrance is the only available table.
Locals Ideology
As a friendly suggestion for those who don’t have such an ideology, it is something to think about right now. The holiday season is when locals are not needed and, unfortunately, tend to sometimes be ignored amid the chaos. It doesn’t often happen, as most locals tend to wait until it has all quietened down, but still, on the odd occasion, they do venture out.
Overall, our restaurants are incredible. We love going out. We are incredibly proud to recommend these establishments and send people to our favourites.
