Construction of the dam began in 1957 and continued for more than a decade. It officially opened in 1969 and remains a vital part of the region’s water infrastructure.
An Impressive Engineering Achievement
The Kouga Dam rises 82 metres above the valley and can store approximately 128.7 million cubic metres of water. It is a double-curvature arch dam, designed to transfer the pressure of the water into the surrounding rock walls.
Engineers also planned for future expansion. The original design allows for the dam wall to be raised by a further 15.2 metres if required.
Meanwhile, a central overflow section helps manage rising water levels. Flood-control sluice gates and chute spillways were also built along the left side of the dam. These structures help control large volumes of water during periods of heavy rainfall.
