Kouga is currently experiencing widespread heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding and disruption across several areas of the municipality.
Roads throughout the region have become waterlogged, with rocks, fallen trees and other debris obstructing routes. Persistent rain has also caused potholes to reopen on numerous roads. The routes to St Francis Bay and Paradise Beach remain open, although motorists are urged to drive carefully due to slippery road conditions.
Flooding and Infrastructure Monitoring
The Kabeljous channel is currently blocked, while the Seekoei River Estuary has reached full capacity and remains under close monitoring by municipal teams. The causeway remains operational at this stage.
Power outages have been reported in parts of Humansdorp.
Strong winds have also caused structural damage in several areas, including Upper and Lower Golf Course and KwaNomzamo, where multiple roofs were damaged.
In Sea Vista, mudslides have been reported, while water pooling has affected roads in St Francis Bay. Residents are advised to avoid hazardous areas, particularly where mudslides and flooding are present.
Further flooding has also been reported in Stofwolk near Hankey and Patensie.
Municipal Response
Municipal roads and stormwater teams have been deployed across Kouga to respond to affected areas. Excavation equipment will be used where required in heavily affected muddy sections.
The municipality has confirmed that the protection of key infrastructure, including electrical substations, remains a priority.
During the evening of Tuesday, 5 May 2026, four residents in Kruisfontein were safely evacuated.
Community halls across the municipality remain open for displaced residents, with the exception of Pellsrus Hall, which is currently undergoing maintenance.
