The 2024 Calamari Classic Pam Golding Best Dressed Fourball Comp

We fed about 300 golfers a boerie at the 2024 Pam Golding Best Dressed Fourball Comp. And a wide selection of drinks, including Albert Saunders water. But the most popular drink was the Springbokkie!

Stationed as always at the 6 ^th tee of the St Francis Bay Golf Club for the first day of the Calamari Classic on Saturday 21 September. We  photographed all 70 fourballs, from the very earliest soon after 7am, to the very last, after 5pm. We printed A4’s and pinned them up in the clubhouse.

Always nice to have a chat to the golfers, standing around the braai for a few minutes. Many of whom we see year after year. And then watch them hit over the water .. or not! And onto the fairway .. or not! But there was no club abuse that we witnessed!

The little video is of the last few fourballs (all from Plett, two of them ladies)/ Also a clip from the prizegiving with Pam Golding Plett agent Mel Glennie and her Plett friends. They won a bottle each of the world famous Pam Golding Red. They were second to the local ladies Noelle Pearson, Liebie Meyer, Cherisr Milne. Joan-Louise Manthe, on the top of the podium this year. Pipping the Plett ladies for the first time in many years!

The winning men’s team was team George Howard, with Vic Pretorious, Casey Beary and Mark Connett, also pipping the Plett men for the first time in many years.

Thanks to the helpful team at St Francis Bay Golf Club, especially Anzet Schoeman, Justin Roux and Mickey Freund, for all their help.

The standard of outfits gets better every year .. where will it end??

Children’s Creativity at the Calamari Festival

This year, as part of the Calamari Festival, a competition for children between the ages of 5 and 12 was introduced.

Because the Calamari Festival focuses on the importance of the ocean and the need to preserve it to sustain the valuable Chokka industry,  the competition urged the participants to use litter creatively.

Children’s Creativity

Children were invited to use litter to create one of the following:

• A musical instrument
• Something to wear
• A toy to play with

On the afternoon of 11 September, the children and their teachers brought an array of wonderful creations to the Community Hall in Sea Vista. There were four judges who were captivated by the range and quality of the entrants. Hantie van der Westhuisen and Dionne Collett from St Francis Tourism, Anita Lennox from the Cape St Francis Resort and Toni Gennrich from the Community Umbrella project. The criteria used to judge the competition were: Creativity, suitability, usefulness, and execution.

All the beautiful creations were on display in the tent at the festival.

The winners were:

The children won toy and stationery prizes, and the schools received a cash prize. Thank you to the Balobi Group of St Francis Bay for sponsoring the prizes.

The 2024 Street Lines Skate Tournament – South Africa’s Premier Skateboarding Contest – Is Coming.

The date has been set for South Africa’s premier skateboarding contest, where the country’s best skaters will battle it out to see who will be crowned event champions. So, the fourth instalment of the Street Lines Skate Tournament will occur on 12 October 2024 at the legendary Thrashers Skatepark in Pretoria. The event is presented by LW Mag and Dragon Energy Drink in association with Converse, Garmin, Balwin Properties and DJI.

The Thrashers Skatepark offers a variety of obstacles, allowing competitors to showcase their skills during their runs. The event will feature invited athletes from across South Africa competing in the Men’s and Women’s Divisions. It is also open to up-and-coming skaters putting their skills to the test.

Qualifying Rounds

Competitors will be pitted against each other through the qualifying rounds. Thus where judges will consider use-of-park, variation, style and tricks when making their selection of skaters advancing into the finals. Competitors will compete for their share of the R60 000.00 prize purse and exclusive prizes from the official event partners. The tournament will conclude with the Best Trick competition open to all competing skaters. The winner is set to take home DJI’s lightest and most compact drone to date, the DJI Neo valued at R7000.

Street Lines organiser Ryan van der Spuy says, “It has been an exciting year for skateboarding with various events around the country and South African athletes competing at the Olympic Games. We are equally excited to add to that list with this year’s Street Lines Skate Tournament and to offer a platform to the country’s best to compete in. Thus, this contest has been created so that skaters can grow, and to develop the sport locally. Also, it allows up-and-coming talent to compete in a professionally run contest. So, we look forward to seeing what unfolds on 12 October and crowning the 2024 champions.”
