Through tireless efforts, Kouga Municipality has successfully obtained authorization from the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism (DEDEAT) to breach the mouth of the Seekoei Estuary.
This directive is only for the lowering of the water level by 450mm and for the immediate repair of the potholes on the causeway.
The breach must be executed on or before 18/19 September 2024, aligning with the Spring Tides, and all associated work is to be completed by 24 September 2024.
The municipality has recently been allocated R7.5 million from the Municipal Disaster Response Grant. This funding, provided by the Department of Cooperative Governance (DCOG) through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), is designated to address the damage sustained by the causeway and ensure its swift repair.
