The Kromme Enviro Trust has formally joined the Thyspunt Alliance and committed R75,000 to support the objective of preventing the proposed nuclear power station at Thyspunt.

This decision follows a detailed review of the Draft Scoping Report and extensive engagement on the issue. Our position is clear: Thyspunt is not an appropriate site for a development of this scale. The area’s environmental sensitivity, ecological importance, and heritage value make the risks of this proposal unacceptable.

Our review of the Draft Scoping Report does not establish a credible case for a project of this nature at this location. There are significant gaps in the data, uncertainties in the proposed mitigation measures, and a lack of confidence that the long-term impacts on the surrounding environment can be properly managed.

The Thyspunt site lies within a uniquely important coastal system. The dune fields, marine ecosystems, and associated biodiversity are both environmentally significant and fundamental to what defines this area. Developments of this scale also have wider, long-term consequences, including pressure on infrastructure, population influx, and permanent changes to the community’s character. These are impacts that are not adequately addressed.

The Thyspunt Alliance will lead the legal process to challenge the development and has secured specialist environmental legal counsel to do so. We believe that supporting this effort, both financially and through coordinated community action, offers the strongest path forward.

To better understand the case being made against the development, we encourage residents to watch this recent interview with Trudi Mallan, who has been instrumental in driving the Alliance’s efforts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1VO4ecC0jE&t=29s

However, legal action alone is not enough. Demonstrating clear and sustained public opposition is critical. If we remain passive, this development may proceed.

We are calling on all residents to take action:

  • Register as an Interested & Affected Party and submit your comments on the Draft Scoping Report before 25 May. Registration ensures your voice is formally recognised in the process.
  • Engage with what is being proposed. Understand the implications for this area and its future.
  • Support the Thyspunt Alliance. Legal challenges require significant funding, and community contributions are essential.
  • Connect with the Kromme Enviro Trust. Follow our updates, engage with our work, and consider becoming a member.
