On Sunday, all the young surf groms from the area gathered at Seal Point for the first Seal Point Boardriders Club grom comp of 2025.
The waves were really fun in the corner, and the groms took to the water for their heats with the help of parents and other club members assisting some of the younger surfers.

Great Occasion
The event was a great occasion and was well attended. Including all the parents, friends, organisers and siblings, there were about 50 people present, and about 15 grom surfers were having a go in the competition and enjoying the perfect little runners that the corner was delivering.
After being in the mid-20s the whole summer, the water had cooled down a little with the recent easterly winds, but this didn’t cool down the surfing one bit, with red-hot ripping from all of our stoked young competitive surfers.
With extra points awarded for commitment and length of ride, there were some champion performances out there, with so many surfers pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and having a go on the bigger, heavier set waves that were pouring through.

Star Performances
Star performances included Leo McLeod, Taylor Thornton, Summer Harding, Brin Jarvis and Abi Jorge, who had one massive backhand takeoff and nearly got the barrel of her life in the process.
In fact there were a couple of barrels coming through in the corner and further down the beach. Other club members like Troye Jorge, Dan Thornton, Nicky Godfrey and Rylan Jarvis were busy snagging their fair share of tubes in between pushing our kids into waves and watching them charging hard for the judges.
Then, there were boerewors rolls and juice for all the kids and hungry parents at the beach, as well as a few refreshing beverages for the adults.
Billy’s Beach and Rotary Club Of St Francis
The Seal Point Boardriders Club has enjoyed tremendous support from Billy’s Beach and the Rotary Club Of St Francis. For the last two years, the Rotary Club Of St Francis has handed out donations to the club on behalf of Billy’s Beach. The funds have been used to purchase an EAD machine, for First Aid courses for members, and to help the club buy equipment to enable the contest to run smoothly. SPBRC is grateful for these generous donations.
The Seal Point Boardriders Club has a busy schedule this year, with grom comps, inter-club events, club championships, the Annual General Meeting and more.

Friday night, we saw the Seal Point Boardriders Club gather at the Pig & Rooster for their inaugural Boardriders Boogie and fundraiser to cap off a successful year.

200 people
An estimated 200 people arrived for the bash, got snacking on the Cape St Francis Biltong samples, and bouncy castles kept the young groms entertained as the rest of the crew had a few libations, spoke about the year, caught up with friends and shot the breeze after a week’s worth of small but fun surf at the beachie.

Membership
After a year of recalibration and consolidation, as well as zero fees for members, it was time to ask for membership fees for those who wished to become members, and we had about 100 members sign up, which was very encouraging.
The Pig & Rooster hotdogs and hamburgers went down a treat, and then it was time for the main business of the evening – the fundraising raffle.
Before the raffle, club chairperson Dan Thornton gave a recap talk, regaling the audience with a description of the club highlights and the surfers who had achieved success on all fronts during the year, including three SA Champions in Slayde Shooter, Rory Dace and Simon Fish.

Sponsorship support
There were so many prizes to be raffled from sponsors, like:
- FIFTH AVENUE BEACH HOUSE
- EAT PRAY LOVE PILATES
- FLAVII
- CAPE ST FRANCIS BILTONG
- THE STORE
- BETTER DAYS
- KLEURSPACE
- HARTS ICE CREAM
- SURF SENSE
- ST FRANCIS BREWERY
- WHITE MOUNTAIN GAME FARM
- RIP CURL and
- BILLYS BEACH
The Big Prizes
Dustin Harding won the blesbok, Wayne Emslie won the tickets for Ballies Beach, and Slayde Shooter won the Rip Curl E-Bomb 4/3 wetsuit, which he gave to his dad, Tim, for a small trade.

It was a fantastic turnout and a great evening. The Seal Point Boardriders Club has wonderful plans for 2025, including the grom comps and coaching sessions, the Club Champs, some local interclub comps, and a grom weekend away camping trip. We are also considering subsidising First Aid Courses for members and parents in the new year.
For those who didn’t make it to the function and still want to sign up as members, mail the club on sealsboardriders@gmail.com to sort it out.
