Sunday, 28th January, saw the first Grom Comp for the younger members of the Seal Point Boardriders Club. The waves were onshore and small at first, and then the west came bowling through and made the conditions even more difficult. Either way, there was such a great vibe amongst the groms, especially amongst the young girls, who all joined in and paddled out for their heats, with many of them surfing in their first-ever surfing tournament.

With 15-minute heats and beach starts, the competitors did not mess around. They were all determined to show their form in front of the judges – the other groms.

Coach and Contest Director Shane
The contest was run by surf coach Shane Thorne, who also got the groms to judge the heats and their peers under his watchful eyes, teaching the young surfers about high-scoring moves, contest strategy and specific little tips and tricks that could help them as they grow into competitive surfers.

There were so many good performances during the day, as well as some very excited surfers getting their first points on the board in a competition. Some of the young girls even beat some of the more favoured and experienced boys in the event.
Girls Were On Fire
Awesome performances from Jade Forsyth, Abi Jorge, Brin Jarvis, Murray-John Boonzaier, Maya Weiss, Slade, and Livvy Shooter, and everyone who surfed in the event with such gusto. We have a team of groms who will win big events one day, so the rest of the surfers in the country better watch out.

At the end of the day, Rory Dace took the win over Rylan Jarvis in the first event of the year for the groms, in what will become a series of club events for the groms. Rory won a voucher for two of JP’s Friday Night burgers from the Full Stop, as well as a very cool ceremonial hammer engraved with ‘nailed it’ with a leather strap with the club name on it, a very cool addition to the trophy cabinet, thanks to Chio Moulang for the trophy and thanks to Lorrin Jarvis for patiently tabulating and time-keeping for the entire event.
Instagram account
The Seal Point Boardriders Club has an Instagram account, and you can see some of the antics from the event @sealpointboardriders. Thanks to all the parents and club members who came down to assist. The next event will be towards the end of February, and we will let everyone know well in advance to avoid clashing with any other events as best as possible.
Looking forward to a great year with the club this year.
If anyone wants to join the club, please email sealpointboardriders@gmail.com – this year is a free membership.
