Sixteen local companies recently benefited from a comprehensive Tender Training Programme organised by the Kouga Local Municipality’s Economic Development Section and facilitated by Khanyasande Business Development Services.

Advertised across various social media platforms and open to all local companies (with limited space available), the programme was hosted at the Hlalisana Township Business Incubator. It aimed to strengthen the capacity of local enterprises to participate effectively and competitively in tender processes.

The programme commenced with an introduction to the fundamentals of tenders and tendering. Participants were guided through how the tender system operates, the regulatory environment, and the essential requirements needed to submit a compliant bid. This foundational session ensured that all participants developed a clear and practical understanding of what is expected when engaging in formal procurement processes.

Representatives from a wide range of sectors – including security, services, logistics, transport, cleaning services, food, construction, manufacturing, and training – were then equipped with strategies to identify informal sources of business opportunities. The training encouraged participants to explore new and emerging markets beyond traditional tender advertisements, enabling them to broaden their reach and diversify their income streams.

As the programme progressed, the tender process was unpacked in detail, with particular emphasis placed on understanding and analysing tender documents. Participants were taught how to interpret specifications, evaluate requirements, and assess the feasibility of tenders before investing time and resources. This critical skill empowers businesses to make informed decisions about which opportunities best align with their capacity and strategic goals.

The financial component of tendering formed a key part of the training. Participants learned how to calculate costs, forecast revenue, and determine profitability accurately. Concepts such as break-even analysis, profit contribution, and pricing strategies were explored, providing businesses with the tools to position competitive and financially sustainable tender submissions.

In the final phase of the programme, participants gained hands-on experience in completing tender documents correctly and comprehensively. The value and benefits of joint ventures were also highlighted, demonstrating how collaboration can enhance capacity and competitiveness.

The programme concluded with an interactive Tender Game, which allowed participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge in a practical setting. This experiential learning approach reinforced key concepts and prepared participants to submit confident, compliant, and competitive tenders in the future.
