Klaasen Turns Trash Into Treasure at Kouga Environmental Awards – with Gallery

Among the contributors was Tony Klaasen from C-Place, Jeffreys Bay. His unique art exhibition captured the imagination of all in attendance. Klaasen, originally from Gqeberha, has been collecting waste materials for years – not to discard them, but to transform them into striking works of art.

Klaasen said it was an honour to be a contributor by displaying his art.

“It felt good to be included in such a wonderful awards event celebrating champions of the environment,” said Klaasen. “Last year, I exhibited my work at the Mandela Bay Arts Festival in February. This time around it was different because I was privileged to engage with like-minded people.”

From toy cars and trucks crafted out of toothpaste boxes and energy drink cans, to miniature houses made from cardboard and detailed with his own painted touches, Klaasen’s creations demonstrate how discarded items can find new life through creativity and care.

His motivation is twofold: a deep love for the environment and a desire to equip children with practical, imaginative skills.

“There is more to waste than throwing it away,” Klaasen said.

“While others see a good-for-nothing used can or empty fabric softener bottle, I see its possibilities. If we teach the next generation to see possibilities in what others ignore, we help both the planet and the people.”
