St Francis Surfers Head to Durban for Quiksilver King of the Groms
Two of St Francis Bay’s young surfers are packing boards and heading north as the Quiksilver King of the Groms surf tournament lands in Durban this week.
Rory Dace and Rylan Jarvis will line up at New Pier and Dairy Beach, two of Durban’s most reliable contest venues. Both breaks offer consistent peaks and allow for high-performance surfing, especially when the conditions settle into rhythm.
The forecast looks promising. A light easterly swell is expected to deliver clean, user-friendly waves, with favourable winds and warm weather adding to the overall contest feel. While the surf may be on the smaller side, it should provide plenty of opportunity for sharp turns, quick combinations and smart heat surfing.

Junior Series Builds Momentum
The Quiksilver King of the Groms is the second stop on a six-event junior series that is steadily building momentum across the country. The series opened with the O’Neill Cold Water Junior Classic in Cape Town, setting the tone with strong performances in challenging conditions.
Durban now offers a different canvas. Warmer water, playful waves and a fast-paced beachbreak environment will test adaptability and decision-making.
From here, the series moves to the Eastern Cape for the Rip Curl GromSearch in Port Alfred, which forms part of the Port Alfred Easter Festival. That event will raise the stakes again, with added pressure and international pathways on offer.
