If you ever wondered what a Rip Curl GromSearch is or what goes down at a junior surfing event in South Africa, this 6-minute clip will reveal everything. It is about winning, getting points and prizes and accolades, but most importantly, it is all about having fun.

The Rip Curl team riders were present at all of the events and helped tremendously to create the competitive yet friendly vibe that exists at these events. The team consists of current U14 SA Boys Champ Ben Esterhuyse (CT), recent U14 Boys runner-up Kai Stubbs (CT), U18 Girls runner-up Gemma Hanafey (EL), Joel Fowles (EL), Rylan Jarvis (CSF), Jack Erlank (SFB) and Blake Crankshaw from Wilderness.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Series 2023 was a 5-event tour around the coast of South Africa with events in Cape Town, Victoria Bay, Port Alfred, Scottburgh and the final event at Seal Point, Cape St Francis.

The tour was a resounding success and has fast become the most popular element of competitive surfing in South Africa. Rip Curl has already confirmed for the 2024 season, and these dates should be out soon.

At the final tournament, the stakes were high, the waves were highly contestable, and some of the best surfing of the year emerged for the judges to see and score.

This clip allows a glimpse into the world of the grom.*

Starring two locals, Jack Erlank and Rylan Jarvis, it was a work of passion by another Seal Point local surfer and filmer Makai Kabot. It’s a funny yet action-packed video that reveals the life of a competing grom and uncovers what goes on at these events.

*Def: Grom, shortened from grommet, is Australian and Californian slang for a young, often precocious surfer. Gremmie is a common synonym.
