Surfing may look like pure freedom, with salt in your hair, sun on your back, waves all to yourself. But the reality is a little more organised. Out there in the lineup, there’s an unspoken code. It’s been shaped by decades of experience, saltwater politics, quiet nods, and the occasional shout, shove, or gentle hold underwater until bubbles break the surface with tiny “help”! messages bursting forth
Not that we advocate violence, of course… but break the rules, and you’ll learn fast enough.
1. Thou Shalt Not Drop In
If someone’s already on the wave, it’s theirs. Always. Dropping in is the surfing equivalent of stealing someone’s drink at the Full Stop, and then staring them in the eye as you finish it. There’s now a possibility of a one-time PK* incoming, destination: your face..
2. Respect the Queue (Even if It’s Invisible)
There’s no ticket machine or sign-in sheet, but everyone knows whose turn it is. Paddle past the waiting crew and “accidentally” take a set wave, and your session will become unbearably uncomfortable. The quiet rumour of a * PK will follow you until you get out of the water.
3. Paddle Out Like You Belong
Don’t paddle straight into someone’s path. That’s like strolling across a cricket pitch mid-over. Turn into the whitewater and take your licks. Or vamoose to the beachbreak, but watch yourself there too. The groms are sharp, fast, and they bite.
4. Don’t Be a Wave Hog
Yes, you’re fit, talented, and your board costs more than your neighbour’s bakkie. But no one likes the surfer who takes everything. Leave waves for the rest, especially the ballies who’ve put the time in.
5. Know Your Place (and Your Paddle Speed)
If the waves are double-overhead and you’re still figuring out how to put your fins in, maybe sit this one out. It’s not about bravery — it’s about survival, yours and everyone else’s.

6. Keep the Beach Clean
Boards, leashes, wetsuits, snack wrappers… if it wasn’t there when you arrived, it shouldn’t be there when you leave. And take your empty dop bottles too.
7. Share the Stoke, Keep It Light
A smile, a hoot, a quick “nice one” — that’s what keeps the cycle going in a small community.
Break the rules and you won’t be fined… but you’ll be hustled, ignored, avoided, and watch your wave count drop to single figures. Every wave will either close out or be dropped in on, until you’re quietly banished — no fanfare, because you don’t deserve trumpets.
Follow the rules, though, and you’ll discover that the real magic isn’t just in the waves, it’s in the camaraderie of those who play by the code, no matter how hard it is.
Readers, feel free to add some rules, because there are many more…
