All is set for a bumper weekend with the Calamari ‘Festival starting with the ever popular Calamari Golf tournament followed by the Calamari Cook-Off on Saturday and the Nautical Half Marathon on Sunday. A great attraction at the Calamari Cook Off will be My Kitchen Rules Celebrity Chefs Lani and Louzel. Home cooks and professionals will be going head to head in a bid to be named Calamari King / Queen 2018.
There is absolutely no reason why the Calamari Festival cannot become a major Cape South coast event in years to come, particularly as it is held in spring whereas most of the other fares and festivals are held in winter, although the weather at the moment is more winter than spring.
St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis really has more to offer than any of the other event menus in the region. Water sports (surfing, paddling and open water swimming), running and cycling and even hiking events in the nature reserves including the Baviaans, rock & surf as well as deep sea fishing, two top 100 rated golf courses, a great selection of restaurants and more than sufficient quality accommodation to accommodate thousands of visitors.
It will take time but this week is a start and St Francis Tourism has at least started the ball rolling it now needs the community to support their efforts. A missed opportunity possibly was that there is no morning market this weekend.
It seems a pity that the organisers of the half marathon chose the name Nautical as that ship has sailed and there no longer a Nautical Festival. The Calamari would have fitted better into the aims of what St Francis Tourism is trying to achieve in creating a festival that may one day meet the heights that Knysna’s Oyster festival has reached. Maybe next year?
