The CSF Ladies Tea Club thank Mike Kimmings

Kouga’s St Francis HospiceThe CSF Ladies Tea Club wish to thank Mike Kimmings for his support in hosting their July Cup of Soup 2017 charity event.

Here Kimmings hands over a donation to Ingrid Williams from Kouga Hospice.  The donation is from Brain Finch, the performing musician, of that evening. He donated his door takings to the cause. The total amount from donations, soup sales and door takings at Rock Lily was R14 704.

We are grateful for the support of the community for this annual project in spite of these tough economic times.  Williams says that Kouga’s St Francis Hospice provides holistic care and support to terminally ill patients in the Kouga area and surrounds.  Many of these people and their loved ones do not only have to cope with their disease, but also live in abject poverty.  Hospice-care is available to all who need it and without donations they will not be able to render the service they do in this rural part of the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Rock Royalty

Rock Royalty to perform in Cape St Francis!

Duncan Faureof RABBIT fame & Mel Botes at The Rock Lilly!

Rock Lily has signed up Rock Royalty to perform on Friday 5th May. Duncan Faure, formerly of RABBITT, the four-piece South African pop rock phenomenon that captured the imagination of a generation, went platinum and generated unprecedented mania among screaming fans who flocked to sold-out venues to lose their marbles to iconic songs like Charlie and Lonely Loner Too. This is where rock legend Duncan Faure took his first step into the limelight. Since then, this talented composer, lyricist, vocal artist, guitarist and keyboard player has managed to play in yet another best-selling band, write 100+ songs and make his way into the Rock Godz Hall of Fame in Las Vegas (USA) in 2014, due to his prolific contribution to rock music. Best of all – Faure is making his way back home for a nationwide tour,

Accompanying Faure will be one of South Africantop musicians Mel Botes,

Who is Mel Botes?

Mel Botes’s music reflects his passion, exuberant creativity and a mind that questions everything: sense and purpose but also boundaries, consciousness and reality. It abounds with contrasting qualities – sometimes bittersweet, painfully beautiful, sad; dramatic, majestic, inspiring, compelling; sometimes disturbing, tempestuous, with explosions of sound that surprise,  but  NEVER boring.  He is definitely one of the most versatile artists in South Africa in his capacity of songwriter, guitarist and producer of powerfully entertaining concept shows.

No surprise then that Mel made his memorable debut on the local music scene in 1998 with a concept show, a rock concert and album.  The CD of this unusually affecting rock-production, David’s Confession – About Time has become a collector’s item and much sought after.

His first Afrikaans album, Oomblik van Waansin (with a title that is a tribute to Pink Floyds’ Momentary Lapse of Reason) is a deeply personal and lyrical chronicle of his own journey:  “It is about the way I grew up, my mom and dad, social influences.”

In 2001 he won a Geraas Award as the Best Songwriter in Afrikaans for Oomblik van Waansin!

Much later .. Mel’s affinity for conceptual stage shows was demonstrated again in 2005 with the musical play Flight of Bird during the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom. The production was nominated for an AngloGold Ashanti Smeltkroes Award.

One of his extremely popular productions – Crazy Diamond – A Tribute to Pink Floyd, has already been staged more than 200 times since its debut in 2008 at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival.  This electrifying multi-dimensional show received raving reviews during the past two years and hundreds of die-hard fans of the most successful rock bands of all time who attended the shows, were taken aback by the authentic sounds and captivating story.

Change in Boks itinerary

SA Rugby decided to change the Bok November Internationals itinerary.

Boks vs Whales

It appears from the photo of the sign (above) posted at Rock Lily,  the Boks have sensibly rearranged their match programme and instead of playing the fire breathing dragons of Wales they will now be taking on, very appropriate for St Francis, a team made up of Whales on Saturday. The Whales have agreed to play on land on condition it can be on the beach as feel they have some experience of beach conditions and it would have an unfair advantage if they had chosen home ground advantage and played at sea.  The Bok coach has apparently stated that it gives him a chance to at last bring his backline into play although De Allenda feels he can still bash his way through the whale’s defense. Willem Alberts it seems is injured so the coach has said he will allow the flyhalf to receive the ball when the Boks are in the opposition twenty two rather than have his forwards playing pivot as they do in their games against normal rugby international teams. According to the notice board  tickets are only R80 so obviously the game is to be played on the expansive sands of Cape St Francis beach.

SARU has also apparently left their options for the Boks next game open and will only decide on their opposition after the whales game. Should they win, their next game will be against the Ostriches for like the Boks, they are unlikely to remember their game plan even if they have one. Apologies Ostriches but being bird brained it really is unlikely you guys will be able to remember the game plan. The coach has indicated if they play the ostriches he will have to revert to the kicking game for the ostriches are renowned for their kicking. To this end he is considering calling up Naas as the kicking coach as well as recalling accomplished kickers Frans and Morne Steyn.

Should the Boks loose to the whales their next game will most likely be the Dodo’s which should give the Boks a great end to their tour with at least one win. That said it will still not be an easy game as they will still need to catch the ball to score.

But fun aside, Rock Lily has a marvelous offering pre-game with a tribute to Bob Dylan tonight. Hope to see you there. Maybe wear your ‘Bok or whales jersey to show who your money is on to win.

Sorry Mike, one doesn’t often get a chance for a bit of fun!

Speed humps needed

Speed Humps needed on Da Gama and at Spar

Speed hump needed on Da GamaIn spite of there being a 40km speed limit in Cape St Francis it seems some treat this little village as their own Monaco street circuit travelling way above the speed limit with some even passing on solid white lines. Certainly it is mostly out-of-towners who ignore the limits but there are a handful of locals who feel it is their right to speed. Possibly in the off season it really doesn’t pose too much danger but habits are habits and once the season starts, these habits may be hard to break setting the example that it is okay for visitors to speed.

But there is one area where speed does create a danger and the traffic authorities or our Ward Councillor should consider doing something about it sooner rather than later. This danger spot is the short stretch of road running between Cape St Francis Resort and Rock Lily on Da Gama Road. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic on this short stretch is bound to increase as the season gets into full swing and much of that foot traffic will be youngsters. Already the grass lawn next to Rock Lily sees kids romping over the weekend and with kids being kids, a ball inadvertently kicked onto the road could see a disaster.

The problem with this short stretch is that those heading north along Da Gama descend a steep hill approaching the resort and unless selecting a low gear, particularly trucks, or sitting on one’s breaks, it is difficult not to generate excessive speed. Travelling in the opposite direction, vehicles, again particularly trucks, are faced with a steep hill and thus approach at speed to make the climb. Either way there are the pedestrians to consider to say nothing of the vehicles slowing down to turn into the resort or Rock Lily parking.

A significant speed bump really is required at least at the bottom of the hill with possibly another just a little north of the resort’s entrance. That there hasn’t yet been a serious accident doesn’t give any guarantee that there won’t be.

Another place where a speed bump is desperately needed is at the bottom of the ramp going down to the lower SPAR parking. With cars negotiating in and out of parking bays again it is a wonder there haven’t been too many fender benders but then most people are considerate and drive slowly. That said, on Sunday morning this scribe, about to turn right into one of the first parking bays, was oh so nearly taken out by a white Toyota travelling at least 60kph down the ramp. That the driver missed me was a miracle for if I had turned a split second earlier there is little doubt the speeding vehicle would have hit me and then been deflected into the cars parked in the bays on the right. The driver seemed oblivious and never slowed until he came to screeching halt near the exit, offloaded his passenger who must work in the centre, before speeding off. The few who witnessed the incident stood open mouthed and shaking their heads at the idiot.
