Surfing Season in South Africa

It’s that time of the year again when we embrace international visitors to our shores and watch them compete against each other and against all the South Africans in a host of surfing tournaments along our coastline.

The action kicks off in Durban, starting at the New Pier before moving up to Ballito for the Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill Challenger Series competition.

After this, the next big event is the Corona Open JBay, a Championship Tour event for men and women that will have world champions past and present in attendance, including Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, John John Florence, Kelly Slater and Italo Ferreira amongst others.

In the women’s, we will see the likes of Carissa Moore, Steph Gilmore, and Tyler Wright all competing.

When the CT action has calmed down, the Rip Curl GromSearch Series – the most popular surfing series in the country – moves to Port Alfred. The Rip Curl GromSearch Port Alfred, presented by The Royal St Andrews Hotel, will be another sold-out event. Surfing South Africa has already extended it to three days from the initial two days on the calendar.

The waves at Port Alfred are consistently good at this time of the year, and surfers, sponsors and organisers are looking forward to yet another brilliant tournament for the best junior surfers in the country.
