Pets Blessing Ceremony as Part of St Francis of Assisi Festival
A Solemn Pets Blessing Ceremony, to be held on Saturday October 1st, will form part of a five day St Francis of Assisi Festival, during which the Kouga Catholic Community will celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Humansdorp, as well as the feast of St Francis of Assisi, which occurs on October 4th.
The Solemn Pets Blessing, which is being presented in association with the Humansdorp SPCA, will take place from 2pm on Saturday October 1st in the parking lot of the Church of St Francis of Assisi, which is accessed from 40 Piet Uys Street in Humansdorp. The Blessing Ceremony is open to all members of the community, as well, of course, as their pets!
There is a catch – all pets will be charged an entrance fee: one item of pet food for the residents of the Humansdorp SPCA!
Pastor of the Kouga Catholic Community, Fr Paul Fahy, said the Festival will primarily focus on a series of Liturgical and Spiritual events within the Catholic community*, but in keeping with the spirit of St Francis, it had been decided to also do something for those less fortunate members of the animal community – those resident at the SPCA.
“This Festival provides us with a wonderful opportunity to draw new insights and inspiration from our beloved Saint Francis, discover his relevance for our world today, especially in the light of the Pope Francis’ publication of Laudato Si, the encyclical on the environemnt, and appreciate why our Pope takes him as his model for pastoral ministry and inspiration,” said Fr Paul.
The Pets Blessing Ceremony itself will take place at 3pm on the day, and will be preceded by a “Pets’ Parade”. All pets MUST be kept on a leash at all times.
Boerewors rolls, curry bunnies, pancakes and tea and cakes will be on sale at the event, and there will also be a sale of second-hand books. All proceeds will be split between the SPCA and the Catholic Church.
*The various Liturgical events are not restricted to the Catholic Community and anyone else wishing to attend may do so – details available from office@kouga-catholic-church.co.za
