Highlighting St Francis Bay Paddlers in SA Marathon Champs Champs
What a great weekend for St Francis with the South African Canoe Marathon Champs having enthralled a large audience not hindered by the wind and occasional rain to line the banks and cheer these wonderful athletes, young and old, men and women, boys and girls.
In possibly the most exciting and certainly the most prestigious event, the Senior Mens K1 Championship, two of the red hot favourites coming in first and second with Andy Birkett just pipping Jasper Mocke by one second to take line honours. Stuart MacLaren came in thisd a couple of minutes behind the winner.
Andy Birkett and Hank McGregor won a the men’s K2 title in another thrilling race with Cape crew of Stu MacLaren and Kenny Rice taking the silver. The bronze went to Louis Hattingh and Hamish Lovemore in the end-sprint, dramatically depriving the former K2 world champ Jasper Mocké and Nick Notten of a place in the medals. .
Birkett & McGregors win earned them a place in the the SA team to compete in the world championships in Portugal in September.
at the South African Marathon Championships on Sunday afternoon, ratifying their selection as part of the national canoeing team to the world championships in Portugal in September.
