Kouga—Kouga Local Municipality will implement a high mast lighting project in the 2025/26 financial year. Included in the scope is the installation of 3 solar-powered mast lights, which will allow Sea Vista to shine
The multi-year initiative will cost R20 million. It will be funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG). It aims to improve lighting in key areas across the region.
The project includes the installation of three cutting-edge solar-powered high mast lights. These being in Hankey (Weston), Patensie (Ramaphosa Village), and Thornhill (Tjoksville). There will also be eight grid-tied high mast lights in various locations. These include Humansdorp (Jeugkamp, Extension 391, Arcadia / Bo-Blok, KwaNomzamo Shukushukuma, and KwaNomzamo Vergenoeg). Also, St Francis Bay (Sea Vista), Jeffreys Bay (No. 10 Rand), and Oyster Bay.
Improved Public Lighting
This marks a continuation of the municipality’s commitment to improved public lighting, building on earlier successes. In 2021, state-of-the-art LED lights were installed in Lower Golf Course, KwaNomzamo; Arcadia, Donkerhoek, and Gill Marcus, with an investment exceeding R1 million.
Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman praised the initiative. He highlighted the profound impact it would have on local communities. “Our residents are at the heart of everything we do,” he affirmed. “These high mast lights are especially effective in areas vulnerable to crime and vandalism. Also, they are far more durable than conventional streetlights. Furthermore, their contribution to safety and security cannot be overstated.”
