PGA Golf Championship at St Francis Links
4-7 November 2021

You would have noticed all the new people in town by now. They’re in the shops and restaurants, as well as the TV trucks and their Outside Broadcasting Studios. The Sunshine Tour is in town, and St Francis Links hosts the PGA Championship over the next few days.

The morning field tees off just before 7 am, so they’re playing already, and the afternoon field tees off around 11:30. It’s going to be a busy few days, so the early morning start will be imperative.

We spoke to Jeff Clause, CEO of St Francis Links, to set the scene on what’s happening. Clause, fresh off the excitement of St Francis Links winning the Best Golf Course In South Africa Award 2021 as announced by the 8th Annual World Golf Awards in Dubai recently, is still pretty excited.

“We couldn’t have asked for more,” said Clause. “We have a top field of entries, including guys like Jaco Van Zyl and Dean Burmester, to name but two, but it’s as good a field as I could wish for.”

With R1,2Million in prizemoney, it’s a big event. The winner will walk away with around R170k, and the event will have live coverage.

“It’s going to be covered live on Supersport, on channel 213, on both Saturday and Sunday from nine am to two pm,” said Clause. “Still, it has been a tremendous opportunity for the local community and us. Everyone has been staying local and eating local, in guest houses and other accommodation. The St Francis Resort has been housing all the television crew and their vehicles. The SUPERSPAR has been assisting with catering and water, and Dirk Ellis Motors has supplied the VIPS with transportation.”

Still, there are COVID procedures in place. “Everyone who comes to The Links has to have a vaccination certificate,” said Clause/. “You can’t attend a sporting event in South Africa unless you have been vaccinated. The best way to prove this is to download the HealthDocs app on your phone and get your vaccination details listed on there.”

There will be temperature tests at the Clubhouse, and there will be a mobile COVID Test Centre from Pathcare on site.

Talking of phone apps, the whole event is happening on phone apps. Apart from that HealthDocs app, spectators can download the Sunshine Tour app to follow scores, tee times and schedules, and see the list of entrants.

Also, don’t forget the St Francis Links app, where you can see the course layout and other information about The Links.

Spectators must park at the bottom and walk up to the Clubhouse. Admission is free. See you there.
