Empowering Futures
Kouga Local Municipality launched its inaugural Kouga Working World Exhibition at Mentors Country Estate on Wednesday, 22 January 2025.
The initiative, set to take place on 10 and 11 April 2025 at Mentors Country Estate in Jeffreys Bay, aims to bring world-class career guidance resources to the Kouga community and schools across the region.
“While Kouga boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates among Eastern Cape municipalities, we recognise the importance of equipping our youth with the tools and exposure needed to secure meaningful employment within our region’s vibrant economy and beyond,” said Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman.
“This initiative is about unlocking potential and broadening horizons.”
The launch event was attended by representatives from the business community, school leadership, civic associations, educational institutions, the media, and government stakeholders. It marked the beginning of a transformative journey for high school learners and post-matric students in Kouga.
A first-of-its-kind initiative
The Kouga Working World Exhibition is a comprehensive programme designed to:
– Provide leading career guidance resources to unemployed youth and school-leavers.
– Present work, training, and funding opportunities to learners and unemployed youth.
– Facilitate collaboration among academia, business, society, and government.
– Support youth in finding meaningful activities.
– Strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the Kouga community.
“As we celebrate the exceptional achievement of our region’s 2024 matric results, with an impressive average pass rate of over 75%, our commitment remains steadfast in ensuring that every learner has access to the resources and opportunities needed to thrive academically and beyond,” said Bornman.
All high schools in Kouga Municipality will be invited to participate in the exhibition.
By partnering with Inkanyezi Event Organisers – renowned for hosting South Africa’s largest Careers Fair in Nelson Mandela Bay for over 25 years – the municipality is poised to deliver a world-class event. The initiative has garnered support from organised businesses, the Eastern Cape Department of Education, and various corporate and civic organisations.
Looking ahead
“Our goal is not only to inspire but to empower our young people to take charge of their futures,” said Bornman. “Together, we can build a stronger Kouga, where every individual has the opportunity to succeed.”
