Since the annual shutdown, the FOSTER reserve maintenance team has diligently worked to maintain trails, eradicate invasive species, and ensure that the FOSTER reserves remain some of the most picturesque in the country for walking, hiking, or cycling. The reserves boast incredible biodiversity and natural beauty and are virtually free of litter and invasive species.

Recent Developments

There have been some recent developments behind the scenes. Dave Bowmer, who has been involved with FOSTER since its early days and served as the reserve manager for many years, informed the committee towards the end of last year of his plans to retire gradually. He expressed a desire to semi-retire and train a successor. While this news was somewhat anticipated, it still came as a surprise.

Fortunately, Dave had collaborated with Themba Nyathi from Themba’s Services on rubble removal and other tasks. Themba has also been overseeing the St Francis Alien Clearing Team, which is supported by a generous resident benefactor. Dave has agreed to remain in an oversight role to coach and mentor Themba, facilitating a smooth transition, evident in the improvements seen in the Seal Point, Seal Bay, Irma Booysen, and Cape St Francis Reserves.

Positive Feedback

The work continues, with positive feedback from visitors in December noting the reserves’ exceptional condition after 20 years of holidaying and trail use. We remain committed to achieving full proclamation status for the Irma Booysen, Seal Bay, and Seal Point Reserves in the coming months. Additionally, we are progressing with our bitou clearing projects, largely funded by Rotary, for which we are grateful. Our membership drive and fundraising events will also continue.
