No controlled burns will be permitted in the Kouga region from next month.

Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman announced that the region’s annual fire prohibition period would commence on 1 November 2024 and continue until 28 February 2025.

“Summer, with its high temperatures and strong winds, presents the greatest risk for runaway fires that can devastate properties and endanger lives in our region,” he stated. “The ongoing drought conditions further heighten this risk.” Which led us to this period of fire prohibition.

Extra caution when using any fire, including candles and braais.

As part of Kouga Municipality’s commitment to public safety, no controlled burns will be permitted during this period. Bornman urged residents to exercise extra caution when using any fire, including candles and braais.

He also strongly discouraged bonfires and any activity involving open flames, such as walking around with candles or lanterns, burning tyres, or discharging fireworks or other flammable items.

“Open fires are strictly prohibited in public areas, except at designated braai stands,” Bornman added.

Burning will be allowed under the following strict conditions:

  • The Chief Fire Officers or the Local Municipality Fire Prevention Officer must approve all burning operations according to their respective burning permit systems.
  • Landowners must apply a minimum of seven (7) days before burning for pre-approval.
  • Final approval for burning must be obtained on the day of the burn.
  • Under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998) (NVFFA), all bordering landowners must be informed of burning operations.
  • The National Veld Forest Fire Act (NVFFA) places a duty on all landowners to have all precautions in place to prevent a fire from spreading or causing damage.
