– In a historic move, the Kouga Local Municipality Council approves R200 million loan – the largest budget for a single project in its history. Allocating this R200 million external loan from the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) to rehabilitate the region’s deteriorating road infrastructure.

Groundbreaking Resolution

This groundbreaking resolution, passed during a Special Council Meeting on Friday, 17 January 2025, builds on an earlier decision made on 27 October 2023 to secure the critical funding.
The municipality will officially launch the Road Resealing Project on Thursday, 23 January 2025. This will happen at the corner of Hoffman and Jacob Streets in Humansdorp where more details about the project and its anticipated impact will be shared.

Urgent Need

This milestone initiative aims to address the urgent need for road repairs and maintenance across Kouga.
The region’s road network has suffered from years of neglect, with the municipality inheriting a R500 million road maintenance backlog in August 2016. Heavy rainfall has further exacerbated the problem. This necessitated immediate action to restore the roads to a safe and acceptable standard.
Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman underscored the significance of the project. “The approval of this loan is a decisive step towards addressing our long-standing infrastructure challenges. This initiative will not only improve road safety but also contribute to the economic vitality of our region.”
