ST FRANCIS BAY – Kouga Municipality is proud to have played host to the exhilarating flag parade and opening ceremony of the 2023 Adventure Racing World Championship at St Francis Links on Tuesday, 17 October 2023.

The event witnessed a splendid display of unity and cultural richness as the locals adorned themselves in colourful African attire. They extended a warm welcome to international guests, who have gathered here to compete in the Kouga region.

The festivities commenced with a stunning display of traditional African dancers, and a soul-stirring choir performance. This was combined with the melodious tunes of a local marimba band, captivating the hearts of all in attendance for a full hour of entertainment.

The flag parade was the symbol of global unity and sporting spirit of the participating teams. Athletes proudly carried their respective national flags, creating a display of diversity and harmony. Each flagbearer epitomised the pride and honour they felt in representing their nations on this esteemed international stage.

Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, expressed his best wishes to all the athletes and teams participating in this grand adventure.

He said, “We are proud to welcome these adventure athletes to Kouga. We hope that their Kouga experience will forever remain etched in their memories as a cherished part of their South African visit. Our region takes immense pride in hosting such an esteemed sporting event. It offers a glimpse of the unparalleled beauty and experiences Kouga has to offer.”

Adventure Racing World Championship

The anticipation is building as 109 four-person teams gather at Cape St Francis Resort, diligently preparing for the 2023 Adventure Racing World Championship. It is set to commence today, Thursday, 19 October 2023.

Hailing from 30 countries, these teams are set to tackle the challenging 800km course over nine days, showcasing their endurance in trekking, biking, and paddling relentlessly, day and night. Their journey to the starting line has been a monumental feat. They all dream of triumphantly crossing the finish line of the World Championship course meticulously set by Expedition Africa.

Adding to the excitement, a dedicated media team comprising 30 professionals from various corners of the globe will be covering the event. This will ensure that the world is connected to the action.

Live GPS tracking through the SPOT tracking units carried by each team will offer a real-time view of their progress. Enthusiasts and supporters will avidly follow their journey across the course.
