St Francis Bay Bowling Club Novices Championship

St Francis Bay Bowling Club was a hive of competitive activity on Wednesday, 11 May when the finals of the “Novices’ Championship” was played, as well as the Personal Trust Sponsored Competition.

There was fierce, but friendly sibling rivalry when brother and sister, Peter Talbot and Margie Young, competed for the title of “Novice Champion”. After some fierce competition Peter finally emerged as the winner and Margie a gracious runner up.

Newcomers to the sport are considered “Novice” bowlers for the first four years of competition, no matter what their age may be, whether 8 or 80. Then, depending on their ability, they are promoted to a different level. There are currently sixteen “novices” in the club.

Once the finals were over, thirty-six bowlers joined the brother and sister and competed in the first “Personal Trust Sponsored Competition” of the year. Johan van der Westhuizen of Personal Trust joined in the fun and participated with great enthusiasm. There were several prizes up for grabs but because the complicated scoring system had not been properly applied, Club Captain Toby Haring eventually declared that the prizes would be drawn for rather than won. Club members thought that this was an excellent idea and expressed their approval with loud applause.

A friendly sociable spirit prevailed throughout the afternoon and, after a very informative talk on the economy by Johan, everyone enjoyed some liquid refreshment and tucked into the sandwiches provided by the sibling novices Peter and Margie.
