Expedition Africa

Way back in the sixties a couple of sun, wave seeking American surfers introduced the perfect wave at Cape St Francis to an international audience with their now iconic movie ‘Endless Summer”. The benefit of that international exposure is still felt today and thanks to the efforts of local hospitality and tourism players building on that initial momentum, St Francis has become a popular tourist destination.

Never sitting on their laurels, Cape St Francis Resort regularly makes visits to major tour operators abroad and the success of these efforts are the regular International tour groups the resort hosts. And the resort is not alone in their effort to build a vibrant tourism industry for St Francis Tourism along with Kouga Tourism and indeed Eastern Cape  tourism, are represented at all the major local travel shows singing the praises of our amazing region.

A few weeks back St Francis Today published a press release announcing that Expedition Africa was to hold their 2017 event using Cape St Francis Resort as the base for the event. Whether anyone other than those close to the event realised quite what an important event this is, is doubtful. Those attending the launch presentation at Cape St Francis Resort last evening certainly had their eyes opened for this is a major event, quite possibly the biggest event ever hosted in the region and certainly up there with other international events held in South Africa. Attracting an audience of millions of international viewers, the value of this event and what it will mean for tourism in the region going forward, simply cannot be estimated other than it can be huge.

Last evenings launch certainly was well presented, most interesting and extremely professional. Movie clips on this amazing event gave the audience a small insight into just how a tough an event Adventure Africa is in that incorporates all sorts of different skills. As one of the presenters commented, triathlon events are warm ups for these adventure races. The Expedition Africa event is raced over a distance of 500 kilometres and the aim is to finish the race a quickly as possible with no rest days, not time-outs, just a start and a finish incorporating every possible obstacle to test skill and endurance.

Accolades  to Esti Stewart of St Francis Tourism and Fasie Malherbe of Cape St Francis Resort for securing this event for St Francis. There is no doubt Adventure Africa will fill many more pages of St Francis Today over the coming weeks and months.
