The Covid lockdown delayed 2021 Nelson Mandela Bay Triathlon Championships has been moved to St Francis Bay following the popularity of the recent People’s Triathlon in the village. The Championship event will be taking place on Sunday 2nd May from 08h30 at Quaysyde with the inclusion of the Super-Sprint (12 yrs+), Sprint (16 yrs+) and Olympic (18yrs+) distance triathlons.

The Championship races will start with the swim leg in the canals off Quaysyde with distances of 1,500m (Olympic), 750m (Sprint) and 330m (Super-Sprint). After the swim, participants take to the road on their bicycles with the cycle route heading along St Francis Drive and Lyme Road North to the R330 where they will cycle between Tarragona Road and the Paradise Beach Road. Super Sprint athletes will complete a 10km cycle, with Sprint Distance doing 1 lap of 20km and the Olympic distance participants doing 2 laps for a 40km distance before heading back to Quaysyde. The run route for the event will be in laps around Sea Glades Drive and Canal Road in a clockwise direction with the Super-Sprint doing 1 lap (2.5km), Sprint Distance 2 laps (5km) and the Olympic distance doing 4 laps (10km).

Organisers of the Championships, Zsports Events SA, are appealing to all residents and day visitors to please take care on the roads during the above times. Traffic Services will be in attendance along the R330 but no road closures or restrictions will be in place along this main road so extra caution of the cyclists is please requested. The road restrictions in place on the morning will be in Sea Glades Drive where the incoming lane between St Francis Drive and Canal Road will be closed to traffic between 08h30 and 13h00. All incoming traffic from St Francis Drive will be diverted left into Sea Glades Drive where they will be able to get to their destination uninterrupted via Canal Road.

Current Covid regulations do require this to be a no spectator event but residents are encouraged to stand outside their properties along the route to support the athletes. The Quaysyde restaurant will be open for usual Sunday trade and also offers a great vantage point of the race proceedings to patrons. Race proceedings can also be monitored through the online results portal on the Zsports website which displays a leaderboard and athlete splits as they progress through the race.

Entries are still open and available on www.zsports.co.za whilst any enquiries can be made on 041 484 7860 or via Whatsapp message on 073 003 4134. Road marshal volunteers are always appreciated for events of this nature and are asked to make contact on the above number.
