Article by Heilie Uys – Ladies Captain St Francis Bay Golf Club
The St. Francis Bay Golf Club (SFBGC) is known as the course in the “Heart of the Village”. This name had its origin in the 1970’s when it was known as the Maxwell 9, privately owned by Leighton Hulett.
The course became playable in 1973, but officially opened with clubhouse in 1975. There were only a handful of golfers, albeit dedicated to their passion.

Cape St. Francis Golf Club Committee 1976/1977 Standing: Ken Jones, Lawrie Aitken, Mary Irvine, June Henson, Buller Pagden Sitting: Harry Hammond, Lance Tate, Roy Wolstenholme, Colin Rose-Innes Insert: Ralph Narramore
The first Committee was formed in December 1976. They were responsible to write the Constitution in order to establish a formal club. This Committee consisted of:
Chairman Buller Pagden
Vice Chairman Roy Wolstenholme
Hon. Treasurer Mrs. Mary Irvine
Hon Secretary Mrs. June Henson
Committee Members Messrs. Harry Hammond, Colin Rose-Innes, Lance Tait (co-opted) Ken Jones, James Melville and Ralph Narramore (co-opted)
James Melville was to resign in March 1977 and his position was filled by Laurie Aitken.
The name given to the newly formed club was “The Cape St Francis Golf Club”. In November 1980 however, the name was changed to that of “St Francis Bay Golf Club”.
On 4th and 5th December the Club celebrated the past 40 years with fun golf and dinner festivities.

Winners Sundowner Competition:
Carol Hemsley; Herb Eickhaus; Rowan Nicolls; Albert Colesky; Tim Elliot; Richard Vauqulin;
Brian Lane with Heather Rabie
Heather Rabie Properties sponsored a 9-hole Sundowner Competition on Friday 4th December which was enjoyed by over 60 players. It was all smiles for the winners who won meat-prizes that will surely come in handy during the holiday season.

Winners Caps Alliance Competition:
Evan Dold, Mike Smith, John Wilson, Ken Nieuwenhuizen. Back: Willie Uys (Captain) and Derek de Villiers (Chairman)
On Saturday 5th December the traditional Captain’s Day took place. A very different golf competition was played, namely a Caps Alliance, the brain child of Louis Boag. Each player in a 4-ball received a commemorative cap of different colours that was used to indicate the player whose score would count on a particular hole. This was not only a fun competition but also nerve wracking as players did not know when it will be their turn to score! The prizes were generously sponsored by Moore Stephens in Humansdorp and Sebastians Butchery sponsored the Nearest to the Pin prizes.
That evening at the Captain’s Dinner the club used the opportunity to honour the “founder” members of the Club. Attending the evening were former Ladies’ Captains June Henson, Lindy Pagden and Joy McWilliams. Persons who were instrumental with the extension of the Course from 9 to 18-holes who attended the dinner were, Eddy and Anita Lennox and Tony Moore. Tony was the guest speaker and in his true humoristic way shared stories from way back with the guests. Everybody toasted the Club with champagne and wine sponsored by Distell – Vanesh Indarjee.
All agreed that the Club is not just for golfers but over the years played and is still playing an important role as home to members of the Village and social clubs who frequently use the Clubhouse as their meeting place.
