An exciting new team event is coming to St Francis Bay this May. It combines physical challenge, local fun, and environmental purpose. It is a unique, high-energy event, and it’s got everything—cycling, running, walking, quizzing, cold plunging, and, most importantly, protecting our dunes! We are now looking for teams of five people to participate in the challenge.
Save Our Dunes
The ‘Save Our Dunes’ Pentathlon Relay, hosted by Kromme Enviro-Trust and St Francis Sport, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, at the beautiful Dune Ridge Country House, just outside the village. This unique relay event aims to raise awareness and funds for the protection of the Oyster Bay Headland Bypass Dune System—known locally as the Sand River—which is currently under threat from commercial mining.
This rare dunefield is home to significant biodiversity and archaeological heritage, and efforts are underway to have it formally declared a nature reserve. The relay event is one part of a broader campaign to galvanise community support for this vital environmental cause.
Teams Of Five
The Pentathlon is open to teams of five, with each member taking on one leg of the challenge:
– 15km Mountain Bike Ride
– 5km Walk
– 10km Run
– Environmental Quiz
– Cold Water Bob – a timed endurance dip in a sea-temperature pool

Fun Fitness and Conservation
Slightly Quirky
It’s a fun and slightly quirky format that’s designed to appeal to a wide range of participants – from seasoned athletes to enthusiastic amateurs. Entry is R1,000 per team (R200 per person), and all participants will receive medals and a one-year free membership to the Kromme Enviro-Trust. The first 10 teams to register will also receive a limited-edition ‘Save Our Dunes’ t-shirt, with additional shirts available for purchase until mid-May.
The organisers are encouraging businesses, local clubs, families, and groups of friends to enter a team, choose a creative team name, and take part in what promises to be an energetic and entertaining day.
Family Friendly Fun Fitness and Conservation
Beyond the race itself, the day will offer a festive, family-friendly atmosphere. Spectators and supporters are warmly welcome, with food and drink available on site, a cash bar, live music, and a master of ceremonies to keep the energy up. Children will be entertained with a bouncy castle and activity corner, and the grounds of Dune Ridge provide an ideal setting for an afternoon out – so bring along your chairs, rugs and blankets.

Help us protect one of our region’s most valuable natural assets – and have a whole lot of fun doing it.

When it comes to how your family will handle their inheritance once you’re gone, relying solely on willpower and hope is not enough. Too often, we assume our children will inherently share our values about money. We trust they’ll “just know” what to do when the time comes. But in my work with clients, I’ve seen this assumption prove misguided—time and again.
Best Intentions
Despite their best intentions, many parents delay addressing the reality of wealth transfer. They avoid difficult conversations, perhaps out of discomfort or the belief that it’s not yet necessary. Unfortunately, when clarity is absent, so is alignment. The result? Inheritance that leads to conflict, mismanagement, or outcomes that would have broken their hearts had they been around to see it.

So, how do we ensure our children use their inheritance in a way that reflects our family values?
Simple: we talk about it. And we document it.
Family Constitution
This is where tools like a Family Constitution come in—a non-binding, values-based document that outlines the purpose of wealth, the principles that guide its use, and the family’s vision for legacy. It’s not a legal instrument, but rather a deeply personal one, crafted while everyone is alive, healthy, and capable of open, honest conversation.

The more wealth a family has, the more important these conversations become. More money doesn’t just mean more privilege—it can also mean more tension, more risk of misalignment, and more potential for heartbreak. It still amazes me how many clients have worked tirelessly to build wealth, yet given little thought to how it will be received—or interpreted—by future generations.
Open Talks
And no, you don’t necessarily need a trust or expensive legal structures to safeguard your legacy. Those can feel like “ruling from the grave,” something most of us want to avoid. What’s often far more effective is hosting regular family meetings to talk openly about money, values, and intentions. These meetings foster understanding, avoid miscommunication, and help everyone feel included in the bigger picture.

Think about it: you’ve spent a lifetime working, sacrificing, and planning to provide financial security. Don’t leave its future up to chance.
Make a plan. Start the conversation, if you’re not sure how, we can help. Shape your legacy with intention.
