Herbi Vohr Plant-Based Meat Substitutes

We are pleased to announce that we are now stocking Herbi Vohr,  a new line of plant-based, vegan-friendly, and protein-rich meat products in store.

Herbi Vohr offers the largest selection of plant-based “meat’ in South Africa.

All 44 of their delicious products use ingredients such as Seitan (wheat protein), tofu, nuts, chickpeas, beet, herbs and spices. Each product is fashioned to resemble real meat and offers authentic tastes

All of their products are based on Seitan (wheat protein)

All About Seitan

Seitan dates back to ancient China; almost 1 500 years ago. Buddhist monks in the 6th century discovered the ‘wheat meat’ after soaking their wheat dough in water and removing all the starch. What remained was a high-protein wheat gluten. Ancient folklore suggests that the same Buddhist monks used Seitan to encourage followers to adopt a meat-free diet, offering ‘wheat meat’ as an alternative to killing and eating animals. The term ‘seitan’ is thought to have come from combining ‘sei’, meaning ‘made of’ or ‘proper/correct’ and ‘tan’, the first character in the Japanese word ‘tanpaku’, which means ‘protein’. It was coined in the early 1960s by the Japanese philosopher and founder of the macrobiotic diet, George Ohsawa (1893 – 1966), who brought Seitan to the West in the early 1960s. The Herbi Vohr range includes biltong, braai products,  breakfast goodies, burgers, deli meat, lunch and supper options, mince, sausages, snacks and steaks.

Wine Of The Week: Balia Vinho Rochas 2022

Balia Winemaking Philosophy
Wines are made in the vineyard, and it is our responsibility in the cellar to trust the work that has been done all year and the terroir in which the wines are grown. We respect the fruit and play our hand very lightly in the cellar to ensure that the wines reflect a true sense of place.

Tasting Notes
An almost equal blend of Syrah and Tempranillo with delicate older oaking ensures its terroir-driven characteristics. Vibrant, juicy, and bursting with minerality, this ‘Wine from Rock’ made from Syrah and Tempranillo reflects the rocky soils in which it’s grown.

About Baleia Wines
All great wines are born from a special location. In the case of Baleia, it is a terroir unlike any other in South Africa. Baleia, Portuguese for Whale, is the first and only winery in the Lower Duivenhoks ward near the remote hamlet of Vermaaklikheid on the Cape South Coast.
