Pam Golding Ladies Golf Open

by Richard Arderne

The annual Pam Golding Ladies Golf Open was played last Thursday and Friday, with Day 1 at St Francis Links and Day 2 at St Francis Bay Golf Club.

Pam Golding has been the sponsor since the event’s inception in 2006, acknowledging that ladies are the prime decision-makers for most residential property transactions!

The Day 1 video features the ladies from clubs all over the Eastern Cape in the clubhouse chatting over coffee before the 11 am shotgun start (with the Pam Golding video on the TVs), Jeff Clause giving the briefing outside before they all drove off in their carts to their “shotgun” start tee. Then Pam Golding Properties – St Francis Bay St Francis Links Specialist Saria Blaauw and cameraman Richard Arderne drove a golf cart to watch a few fine golf shots (and some not so fine) on the 10th, 16th and 17th holes.

The Day 2 video is of the prize-giving on Friday afternoon, with Jeff Clause introducing Saria Blaauw, who spoke about the property market, particularly on the Links. Then Noelle Pearson read out the winners, with Saria handing over the prizes.

Both Carol Sharman (left) and Lynda Mynhardt (right) from the Links were the winners. Well done, Carol and Lynda!

Unfortunately, no one drove away in the brand new Dirk Ellis Volkswagen Polo for a hole-in-one. There were a few close attempts, but no one was the winner.

What Is Your Legacy?

What Is Your Legacy?

What Is Your Legacy? The Human Side Of Money presented by Client Care

Part of our work with clients includes planning what happens with their wealth once they are not around anymore. This is often referred to as their legacy. We find that most of the discussion around this subject revolves around taxes, such as estate duty and CGT, with a view to minimising these. The less the tax man takes, the more there is left for our beneficiaries.

Planning Early

If we start this planning early on, much can be done to ensure that the maximum of one’s left-over wealth transitions into the hands of those we want to benefit from our lifetime of work and investing. While this tax-based focus is the traditional way of looking at legacy, at Client Care, we understand that there is also another way to view this part of one’s planning.

What is your Legacy?

We know that people are living longer, which has become a serious consideration when doing financial planning. Making sure one has enough to take care of future healthcare and potential care costs is a must. Despite this, many clients we work with still have more than they need. We can “ring fence” the wealth they need for their future life, and the balance is left to their heirs and/or beneficiaries.

                      What is your Legacy?

Unnecessary Hardship

A consequence of living longer also means that our children and their families end up receiving their inheritance much later in life, even once they are at retirement age. It means that there is the possibility that they may go through unnecessary hardship at a time in their life when they could have used a bit of financial aid.

This can be seen as giving with a warm heart rather than a cold hand. I am not talking about giving them an easy ride, which can lead to irresponsible behaviour. The aid could come in various forms, such as paying for grandkids’ education or helping settle long-term debt through the help of a “friendly” loan.

          What is your Legacy?

Instead of hoping that an inheritance is spent wisely after we pass, we can create another form of “legacy” by creating memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. Taking the whole family on the trip of a lifetime or buying a holiday home which everyone can use while raising your grandkids can mean more than a wad of cash much later in life.

The Best Life

One often focuses on building wealth and then holding on to it. Most advisers won’t tell you to spend more money as this may correlate with what they earn. By having a real personal financial plan, the decisions around how and when we spend our money become easier and allows us to live the best life we can with those who mean the most to us.

Cape Town surfer Eli Beukes has delivered his best surfing video yet. So, this movie was filmed in and around South Africa, with the lion’s share of filming duties attributed to his dad and Alan Van Gysen. Thus the movie Chommies is a remarkable demonstration of this soft-spoken regular footer’s surfing talent.

 Overwhelming Determination

One thing that might have been mentioned about the Long Beach surfer in the past is that he sometimes needs more confidence. Those asides are gone as he pulls off some intense airs and glides through endless metres of churning barrels. In fact he displays overwhelming determination and tenacity in his surfing.

Eli and his chommies score some ridiculous waves, including several of his favourite waves around Cape Town and the West Coast. He also lucks into Donkey Bay. The right-hand barrels they score at all-time Mozambique clearly explains why the call that wave the African Kirra.

His chommies are Brendon Gibbens and Luke Slijpen, who accompany Eli, riding endless metres of spinning water in the barrel fest of Donkey Bay and Mozambique. They are also highly adept at air moves and keep impressing as the movie progresses.

 Eli’s Humble Brag

As Stab Magazine said in their review of Eli Buekes Releases ‘Chommies’ – “It’s yet another testament to South African surfers. A reminder that if one can brave the elements, the big fish and a debilitating currency exchange rate, good things can happen. Consider this Eli’s humble brag.”

Eli has the complete package, and he is also quite delighted when taking gnarly drops at chunky and unforgiving slabs. The movie also has a rocking soundtrack to go with all the charging. Check the 15-minute film here – Chommies.
