With a constant flow of athletes and others heading for sessions at the chamber, we decided to find out just precisely what a hyperbaric chamber is, and what are these many benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

We sat with Blue Abyss owner and resident and resident Chiropracter Dr Carmel Billson to chat about the many benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is a hyperbaric chamber?

A hyperbaric chamber is a chamber or capsule that you lay or sit in, fully clothed. Inside the chamber, you breathe close to 100% oxygen which is transported to the blood and reaches even the damaged cells.

Is this the same thing that divers use for decompression sickness?

Yes, it is similar. The difference is that our chamber works at a lesser pressure, therefore, having a therapeutic effect and causing fewer adverse effects. 

What does it do, physically? I.e. what are the oxygen levels that you will experience? Does it remove nitrogen? 

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive method that supplies oxygen at high concentrations in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber. This is at a minimum of 1.3 ATM atmospheres (higher than the normal ambient atmospheric pressure of 1 atmosphere).

What does this actually do to the body? How does the body benefit?

Oxygen therapy can be highly beneficial for those who frequently experience low oxygen levels, regardless of why. If needed, regularly utilizing oxygen therapy can allow people to be more active and mobile by decreasing shortness of breath. It can also significantly improve the quality of life and extend life expectancy in many cases.
