Women Rule Pipe on Day 1 at the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing pres. by Hurley

PIPE, POLLOCK BEACH, PORT ELIZABETH – It was a perfect start to the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing pres. by Hurley, with high performance surfing in glassy, 3ft surf for the first day of competition in the Women’s QS 3000.

The South African contingent had a rough start, with 4 of the six surfers eliminated in Round 1. It was the two event wild cards, Ceara Knight from Kommetjie and East London’s Zoe Steyn who stepped up to the plate to secure their spots in the Round of 32.

Knight won her Round 2 heat, eliminating Rachel Presti from Germany and Piper Harrison from Australia, while Steyn managed to hold on for a second place in a tough heat against Japan’s Sara Wakita.

South Africa’s former Championship Tour (CT) competitor, Bianca Buitendag (Vic Bay) bagged a comfortable win in her Round 2 heat with a pair of 7-point rides.

As the swell started to drop, top seed Phillipa Anderson (AUS) got to work in the perfect, punchy waves on offer for two excellent scoring rides and the highest heat total of the day at 16.50.

The current WSL World Junior Champion, Kirra Pinkerton (USA), delivered a critical performance, getting the attention of the judges for a convincing heat win. Pinkerton only surfed three waves in the 20 minutes, including an excellent 8.50 ride to take her total to 16.17.

The next call is at 8AM on Friday, 14 June and will be the start of the Men’s QS 1000.

Alongside the world-class surfing action, the CSS events also embrace sustainability and transformation programs such as the Surfing South Africa Learn To Surf outreach project in collaboration with Caltex, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Ocean Pledge.

Ocean Pledge will assist in creating ‘Blue Events,’ while the NSRI will be educating members of the public, competitors, local schools and surf outreach programs about ocean safety and ocean awareness.

More information, results and images will be available on www.worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App. Catch the final day’s action LIVE on the WSL QS Facebook page.
