Wild Flowers in St Francis

Why visit Namaqualand when we have just as good on our doorstep?

wild flowers st francis

Not be as expansive as offered up in Namaqualand but our wild flowers are just as breathtaking.

Driving between Cape St Francis and St Francis Bay one does get a glimpse at some of the magnificent spring flowers presently blooming in the greater St Francis region. One of the benefits of the devastating fires of last January is that it cleared some of the alien bush and has allowed the spring flower to find their freedom and adorn our landscapes.

Cape St Francis Resort with FOSTER promoted a fantastic opportunity on the Wild Flower Chase, a supervised tour into the Air Park to experience the floral phenomena on our doorstep which although on a far smaller scale than the spring flowers of Namaqualand, certainly compete in terms of their beauty.

Dave Bowmer of FOSTER has set up an extremely interesting and educational display of the many types of Fynbos that are present in our region sampling many of the species with a live plant along with a description. This display was set up in one of the resort’s conference venues but as the room is presently being used for its intended purpose, conferences, the display is not available at the moment.  Anita Lennox of Cape St Francis Resort has informed St Francis Today that the resort hopes to be able to set up the display and tour, even if only for a day or two, to allow more people to experience our floral beauty.

So watch this space for as soon as there is more definite news on whether and  when the  Wild Flower Chase to see this floral beauty in situ in Air Park and IBFR may again be available, we will let readers know. We do however encourage you to book your place immediately if the opportunity presents itself.

Possibly in years to come our sping flowers could feature as a futher attraction and reason to visit St Francis over the Calamari Classic festival.

The St Francis Bay Oktoberfest 2017

OktoberFest in St Francis Bay

Oktoberfest St Francis Bay

After the success of the OktoberFest last year, plans are well underway for the 2017 edition which promises to offer loads of fun from dancing late into the night to water sport in the St Francis Bay Canals.

In keeping with the popular Bavarian beerfests hald in Germany at this time of year, the St Francis OktoberFest will be no less vibrant and fun. With a selection of craft beers by St Francis Brewing Company and Poison City Brewing on offer, all served along with traditional German food and no doubt some good ole SA boerewors and braai, what better way to have some fun. For those preferring a glass of wine to beer, wine bars will be available as will a spot or two of gin offered from a selection of craft gin choices.

Last year we had so much fun dancing late into the night, and this year promises to be another party of note. Get into the spirit of things and dress up! Book your ticket asap as numbers are limited.

This event, set up by parents of the St Francis College to bring some fun and an element of school fund-raising into

St Francis Bay in a traditionally quiet month, has become a highlight on the St Francis Calendar, for both St Francis residents and homeowners from surrounding areas. This year initial sales show much interest from outlying areas, with our neighbours who are keen to come over the Kromme River and have a look-see at what cool events we have in St Francis Bay.

The Oktoberfest will once again be presented by St Francis College, and the parents are working hard in order to grow this festival, to make it a highlight event in the Kouga region.

In addition to the Beerfest and party, this year there will be a water sport event – Water Polo In The Canals – run by our local open water swim club and Liquid Lines swimming facility based in Cape St Francis. This is the next step in our vision to bring a complete “lifestyle festival” to our village.

To support the Oktoberfest and the St Francis College, the St Francis Surf Factory has donated two ‘grom’ boards towards the fundraising. Raffle tickets are R50 each, and the two winners will each with a custom-ordered ‘grom’ board valued at R4,000 each. So buy some tickets for your kids. Winners will be announced on the night.
