Successful FOSTER Golf Day

FOSTER - friends of St Francis nature areas

FOSTER GOLF DAY 9 JULY 2016

The FOSTER Golf Day held at St Francis Bay Golf Club last Saturday turned out to be a huge success with a field of over 100 golfers teeing off in near perfect weather. Thanks to those golfers who contributed to the success of the day by entering into the spirit of the event and to the many generous sponsors who supported the event with financial donations and prizes, the money raised will allow FOSTER to continue with the incredible work they do for the nature areas of St Francis.

Whilst Ken Gammie, Jules Gazet, Brett Wilson-Jones and John Wilson won the golf the real winner was being able to generate funds to ensure FOSTER is able to continue clearing our reserves of highly inflammable invasive alien plants (principally Acacia cyclops or rooikrans), In addition it will allow FOSTER to continue establishing a system of peripheral and interior access routes for firefighting, establish a network of footpaths and implement a wide range of outreach programmes.

The day was dedicated to the late DAVE FISH who served selflessly on the FOSTER committee and

initiated the FOSTER Golf Days to raise much needed funding

Sand River Bridge – Construction due to start

Just when we thought it was all but forgotten there is at last positive news on the Sand River bridge

After many months of uncertainty we now have good news.  The tender for the Sand River Bridge has been awarded and construction will commence in the next two weeks.

The tender has been awarded to a Cape Town based company, EMPA Structures, and it is envisaged that it will take 14 months to complete.  During construction the existing causeway will still be used.  It has also been indicated through our Ward Councillor, Ben Rheeder, that they intend to employ local labour, which is good news for the Sea Vista community.

A team from EMPA will be visiting St Francis Bay later this month and have agreed to meet with the St Francis Property Owners and other affected parties to discuss some of the issues that need to be addressed which include calming measures, speed signs and the possible nuisance factor if construction continues during the holiday period when considerably more traffic will be using the R330.

Jordy Smith Eliminated From JBay Open

After watching great waves all morning, it was decided to proceed with the quarterfinals of the JBay Open. The first quarterfinal matchup was between Jordy Smith from South Africa and Hawaiian surfer John John Florence.

The two surfers paddled out for their heat this morning and somewhat bizarrely, the waves grinded to a virtual halt. In fact, no waves were ridden in the first 15 minutes of the 35-minute heat, and the contest organisers were forced to restart the heat.

Eventually after a sudden flurry of waves at the end of their heat, the win changed hands a few times but it was eventually the popular Hawaiian surfer who got the nod over his South African counterpart.

“Stoked to make it through, that was a scary heat,” said John John after his heat, as the final scores were announced.

Jordy Smith was frustrated after the heat, but always upbeat and positive. “I’m just super bummed out right now,” said Jordy. “Still, that’s why we love surfing, for these kinds of reasons, you know. Hopefully I can get the bump on the next one.”
